We aren’t “sold out”—we just don’t have any Amethyst Shooting Star this year. They take two years from germination to sale. We might next year if germination is good in spring and the plants grow well. Beautiful plant, but very slow to get started from seed.

Amethyst Shooting Star blooms early in the spring in sunny and shady locations. The pinkish flower stems shoot up from a clump of leaves, then Amethyst Shooting Star goes dormant for the rest of the summer. Shooting stars take 2-3 years to bloom. The 2nd year Amethyst Shooting Star plants we have for sale are shipped with green leaves which will go dormant after a month or so, usually flowering the next spring.

Design Tips

Amethyst Shooting star blooms in spring and then goes dormant, so make sure to plant other flowers and grasses close to them to fill the space when their leaves disappear in summer. Plant near borders and among summer or fall blooming plants that can fill the gap when Amethyst Shooting Star (Dodecatheon amethystinum) goes dormant.
