What are plugs? Plugs are plants grown in 72-cell trays; each soil plug is 1.6” wide x 3.2” deep. They are a great option for planting large gardens. We plant all of our own projects with plugs.

Big Leaf Aster spreads underground to stabilize and cover ground in shady areas. The fast spreading nature of Big Leaf Aster makes it suitable for shady locations that need large areas of native groundcover. It’s a great plant for covering large areas of shaded areas, especially after removing buckthorn or other invasive plants.

Design Tips

Plant Big Leaf Aster with other more aggressive shade plants that spread such as Zig Zag Goldenrod and Pennsylvania Sedge. Big Leaf Aster (Aster macrophyllus) can be used as an understory plant to create a soft landing beneath trees or shrubs.

Maintenance Tips

Big Leaf Aster doesn’t require much maintenance. It doesn’t have as many flower stems as many of the other asters, and looks fine if it isn’t cut back at the end of the season. It does spread by rhizomes underground, and if you don’t want it to spread, you’ll have to dig out the edge of the rhizomes to keep it in check.

Great native plant choice for the Minnesota Lawns to Legumes grant program!

Companion Plants

Poke Milkweed
Sweet Joe Pye Weed
Wild Geranium
Zig Zag Goldenrod
