The Monarch Garden Pack has three of the best flowers for attracting monarch butterflies: Butterfly Milkweed, Marsh Milkweed, and Meadow Blazing Star. We chose these species because they provide food for caterpillars and nectar for adults butterflies. The milkweeds in this garden pack don’t spread as much as the common milkweed you see in the wild—they stay in clumps and don’t spread underground. These plants are perennials and come back each year.

The milkweeds will attract monarchs to lay eggs on. If you see a monarch in your patch, watch for it to deposit tiny white eggs on the underside of the milkweed leaves. Butterfly Milkweed is a short plant with orange flowers and prefers drier gardens. Marsh Milkweed grows waist high with pinkish-red flowers and prefers medium soil moisture or a good layer of mulch.

Meadow Blazing Star is the real showstopper though—the nectar is extremely attractive to monarchs and attracts butterflies from blocks around. When it blooms in mid-August, not a day will go by without a monarch feeding on the nectar. Customers often report as many at 7 monarchs feeding on a single stem!

The Monarch Butterfly Garden Pack can either be planted as a small 6ft x 6ft garden or you can add the plants to your existing landscaping or perennial gardens.

Great native garden choice for the Minnesota Lawns to Legumes grant program!
