This Garden Starter Pack includes 18 plants, a garden design, and instructions for planting and maintenance. The design and instructions are available here.

This Pollinator Starter Pack is a combination of our favorite sun-loving plants that attract bees, butterflies, or provide important food for pollinator larvae or caterpillars. You can either make a small garden or you can add the plants to your existing landscaping—most of the plants form tidy clumps, just like the perennials you might already have in your landscaping.

We designed this garden with a nice combination of host plants for pollinator larvae and nectar sources for adult pollinators (see list below). The Pussytoes are a host plant for Painted Lady Butterfly caterpillars, the Milkweed hosts Monarchs, and the grasses and sedges are hosts for skipper butterfly caterpillars. In August, the Meadow Blazing Stars will bloom and attract monarchs every day to drink the nectar (we call it the Monarch Magnet!). It’s truly an amazing sight.

This Starter Pack will fill a small area about 6ft x 6ft—if you’d like a bigger garden with more blooms at a time, buy 2 or 3 Starter Packs and combine them into a larger garden!

Great native garden choice for the Minnesota Lawns to Legumes grant program!

Design Tips:

  • You can use these plants to plant a new 6ft x 6ft pollinator garden or you can add them to an existing gardens or landscaping.

  • We recommend completely removing any weeds or lawn grass before adding 3” of wood mulch (not included). Wood mulch reduces weeds, reduces watering to just 3-5 times the first year, and nearly doubles plant growth—well worth the extra work and cost.
