Skullcap is a perennial that grows about 8 inches tall and has small, blue flowers that bloom in mid-summer. This plant is a great addition to a pollinator garden because it supports small bees and other pollinators. The name comes from the flowers which look like they have little caps on them.

Skullcap has several other benefits. It is relatively easy to care for and can tolerate a variety of soil types and growing conditions, including poor, gravelly soils. It spreads underground about half a foot each year with small, tuberous rhizomes. It doesn’t make a mat or dense groundcover though—it mingles under larger plants. In prairies, you might see it scattered in the undergrowth if you get on your knees and look closely!
